Artificial flaming coals in a 1930's fireplace
The installed fire looks very good and there is more than enough heat from the fan heater, so mostly excellent other than 2 major things and 1 minor thing:
1. Whilst the tapered coals light unit case fits the taper of our 1931 fireplace, the back of the fire unit is wider so it was necessary to cut back the firebrick to fit it fully back to the rear of the firebrick.
2. It is difficult to get the remote to communicate with the fire unit. It was necessary to make a small mirror unit and mount it at 45° on the custom made ducting from the fire to the edge of the grate front plate then hold the remote vertical above pointing it at the mirror to get it to work. It would be better if the receiver were at the top of the covered light unit.
3. The illumination of the flame/coals is not very bright but most people who have seen the fire switched on were impressed.
As a comment, to avoid hot air recirculation, a fitted ducting was made to connect the output from the fan heater to the outlet in the grate front plate
