Fire Grates & Grate Bars
Fire grates are an essential piece of a solid fuel fire allowing coals or logs to burn brightly and allowing air to be drawn from underneath to fuel the fire. It is essential for fireplace grates to have horizontal or lateral bars with gaps. The gaps allow oxygen to be drawn from underneath the fire and allow hot ash to be collected below. Fireplace grates normally sit above an ashpan which collects the hot embers from the burnt fuel to be disposed of safely once cooled.
Some grates are designed so that they can burn fuel for longer periods of time, specifically the all night burner style. This style has a fire front which is sealed and placed in front of the grate which regulates airflow / oxygen from underneath. This is achieved via an adjustable control in the fire front which when fully open allows maximal air flow for a roaring fire and can be closed completely allowing the fire to smoulder overnight.
Most modern fire grates are made to fit a standard tapered fire back which are available in 14’’, 16’’ and 18’’ styles. Always note that when referring to tapered fire backs and fire grates that the actual measurements are never the same as the size in the title. For example, a ‘’16’’ fire back’’ actually has an opening of closer to 15’’ at the front. If ever in doubt, the actual dimensions of our fire backs and fireplace grates are available in the ‘’Dimensions’’ tab at the bottom of the product pages.
We stock 14", 16" and 18" tapered grates plus a whole range of non-standard size grates to suit a range of stoves, fire baskets and specific fireplace models such as the Baxi Burnall fireplace.
Our huge range of fireplace grates come in all shapes and sizes ensuring you will find the perfect size to match your fire. We have a massive variety of different styles and sizes to suit 99% of fireplaces whether you are buying new or replacing for an old fire.
If you have measurements of your old grate or the opening where the grate sits make sure to use our ‘Grate Finder’ tool to quickly track down which fire grates we have that are of a similar size.
